**Beginning Sept 2026, I only offer telehealth. Feel free to reach out to schedule a free 15-min consultation. I will do my best to respond to the email you provide within 2-3 business days** Are you looking for specific resources for international students? Check out iTHRIVE, an evidence-based workbook that I developed specifically for international students: https://amzn.to/3NJEf6o -- Hi! Thank you for visiting my page. I am so glad that you are taking an important step towards your goals. My name is Dr. Lei (pronounced /lay/) Wang (/wong/) and my pronouns are she/her/她. I am originally from Taipei, Taiwan. I received my M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri and my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Indiana University Bloomington. I am a Licensed Psychologist and I offer in-person therapy on Tuesdays on Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, PA and telehealth on Wednesdays and Thursdays within PSYPACT states. I provide bilingual therapy in English and Mandarin Chinese. I have over 10 years of experience working with clients to overcome most presenting issues (i.e., anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, relationship concerns, identity exploration) and specialize in short-term therapy, career counseling, working with university/college population (students, staff, and faculty), and individuals coming from historically marginalized communities (i.e., students of color/BIPOC, international/immigrant students, LGBTQIA+). I also have experience working with clients who are themselves in the field of mental health. I take a strengths-based, multicultural, and client-centered approach to therapy. I value collaborating with clients to determine goals, direction of therapy, and homework between sessions. I honor my clients’ diverse backgrounds and experiences. I provide tools, such as CBT and mindfulness techniques, so that clients can feel more confident and thrive.

I believe that people tend to know what is best for them deep down, and it is my job to assist them in discovering what they feel is the best solution. I am systemically oriented in my therapeutic work, seeing a problem as embedded in relationships either within the family, or even the larger societal system. Together, we will explore the root causes of your problems and evaluate specific approaches you can take to accomplish your goals. Another fundamental part of my approach is compassion and empathy. I tend to see the positive in people and can hold a significant amount of pain when clients reveal the hurt inside. I feel privileged to be a part of their healing journey.

Sometimes life feels big and fast, and really painful. You might be going through a major transition, dealing with a loss, or coping with intense stress. Whatever the cause, you’re left with the sense that things just aren’t right. Overwhelming as things feel, inside of you, there’s also wisdom and a great capacity to understand and heal what hurts, so that you feel more peace internally and experience more enjoyment as you navigate challenges, losses, stress–whatever life puts in your path. Together, our work will be to find and nourish the wisdom and ability that's already within you. I meet you with openness to all the parts of you, whether they’re critical or criticized, anxious or calm, heavy with sadness or energetic and driven. We work to access and open up the gifts these parts hold and to connect with the core you that’s so full of wisdom and vigor. Life slows down. Healing begins. And a brighter, clearer path opens up before you.

My passion is working with clients who struggle with eating concerns and body image issues. I have experience with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. I can also help if you feel that your relationship with food and/or exercise is complicated but have not been diagnosed with an eating disorder. I practice from a Health at Every Size® perspective and offer an inclusive space for all. I value being empathetic while challenging my clients to step outside of their comfort zone and unlock their strengths. Taking the first step to get help and support can be intimidating but it can lead to growth and change! My approach to treating eating disorders is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as emotional exploration. Sessions focus on emotional awareness, thought exploration, mindfulness, and reducing avoidance. I also treat co-occurring diagnoses such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and depression. Whether you have been struggling for some time or are just curious about therapy, feel free to contact me. I am open to phone consultations prior to the first session. One phone call or email can be the first step to change and a growth mindset. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and I look forward to hearing from you!

I feel the most important aspect of counseling is the relationship between the counselor and client. If we are able to create a genuine relationship that is grounded in authenticity and trust, we can further your understanding of yourself, your experiences, and how you engage with the world. I aim to help people by cultivating a safe environment where thoughts and emotions can be deeply felt, and where we can discover what steps you can take in your life that better align with your values. Through counseling, we can learn how to acknowledge thoughts, feelings, and past experiences without having them overwhelm or define us. I believe that the present is the most important time to be in; however, many things from the past (or even the future) can hold us back from experiencing what is going on around us. When we are able to process our past and our future, we are finally able to connect with the current moment we are living in. I have worked with people experiencing different challenges, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, interpersonal stress, and identity/self-esteem issues. Ultimately, I am passionate about working with anyone who feels “stuck” and wants to find meaning in their life. Moving forward is possible, no matter how long you have felt stagnant.

I love being a counselor and deeply enjoy the collaborative process of psychotherapy. I bring personal warmth, respectful curiosity, and genuine care for you as a person into our work together. My enthusiasm is blended with a naturally gentle demeanor, respect for you and your experiences, and commitment to principles of social justice. Whether you’re reaching out for personal enrichment, general emotional support, or specific mental health concerns, I can be a helpful collaborator for a variety of purposes. I provide individual therapy that is grounded in social consciousness and focused on your needs. It is a common and welcome scenario to be uncertain about our direction at the outset. We’ll figure it out together by understanding your interests and concerns, as well as the interpersonal, cultural, and sociopolitical dynamics interacting with them. The focus of our work can encompass anxiety, depression, LGBTGEQIAP+ affirming therapy, transitions and life changes, self-concept/ compassion, collaborative assessment and diagnosis, grief and bereavement, interpersonal skills, stressor-related issues, and other concerns. While I’m eager to work with adults of any age, I’m especially experienced with helping young adults navigate heavy existential questions, identity development, political distress, and career and academic exploration. Prior to counseling, I was a student affairs professional at several different universities, and consider that background important to many aspects of my identity as a counselor. The purpose of our work will unfold through a meaningful therapeutic relationship, prioritizing your self-expertise and personal strengths in conjunction with my theoretical approach. Although each person’s therapeutic process is unique, our work can involve developing insight from emotional experience, re-contextualizing suffering through political and socio-economic critique, interpreting thematic patterns for new ways of relating to self and others, constructing meaning to restore or enhance agency, and building relational empowerment for social change. I grew up in Pennsylvania and recently returned after three years in Houston, TX and another ten years living in three other states. In addition to counseling, I enjoy running, learning, travelling, coffee, reading, movies, and ice cream. Most especially, I cherish quality time with my spouse, family, and multiple pets.

I am a Licensed Social Worker (LSW), and a queer and non-binary person who uses they/them pronouns. I am also half-Taiwanese and half-White, neurodiverse and chronically ill. I love working with clients who don’t fit neatly into society’s pre-determined “boxes,” and are seeking to experience more enjoyment, fulfillment, and authenticity in their own lives – especially in terms of expressing themselves fully. This may involve experiences of gender, sexuality or perhaps a life transition such as career change, I’m open to all of it. Ultimately, I am curious about learning about people for who they are, and how they move through the world with whatever intersections of identity they may possess. My approach is grounded in anti-oppression and social justice principles and centered around the foundation of a genuine and compassionate therapeutic relationship with each and every client. I am here for the open acknowledgment of all that you have experienced, and all that you are, by providing plenty of space for both curiosity and reflection. In our work together, I will prioritize your autonomy, trusting you as the expert for you. Through a collaborative, non-judgmental, “as structured as you want it” approach, I am here to show up for you - to support you through your walk through life – however that may look like for you. I am trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and take a Strength-Based and Culturally Sensitive approach. I utilize Psychodynamic therapy and techniques and skills taken from other modalities as needed, as they apply to the work you would like to do in therapy.

At Comfort Companions Counseling, I bring the human-animal bond into therapy in a real and meaningful way, creating a warm and judgment-free space where you can slow down, reconnect with yourself, and build real coping skills. I specialize in working with college students navigating anxiety, depression, chronic stress, trauma, life transitions, and the emotional exhaustion that comes with trying to do it all. I also conduct ESA evaluations with care and thoroughness, and a letter will be provided if clinically appropriate following the completion of the evaluation. Our Mission is to help clients reach their full potential. Everyone has their capacity for happiness and we want to help you find it. We believe that everyone can create a happy, healthy life, but it takes hard work and is not just handed to us. Happiness comes from creating connection to ourselves, our environments, our purpose, and others. We help adults looking for assistance in improving their lives and breaking through old patterns of behaviors. We help those looking for direction, purpose, and answers to questions about their experiences. People ask themselves why they keep having the same things happen over and over in their life, we can help figure out those patterns and help to eliminate them so that you can move forward.
