She received her Master's Degrees in Elementary Education from Southern Connecticut State University and in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University. Melissa completed her practicum and internship at Ray of Hope, providing play therapy for children and individual and couples counseling for adults. She has worked with individuals to address mood and anxiety disorders, grief, and relationship issues. In addition to private practice, she has provided therapy in a university counseling center and at an outpatient recovery center for opioid addiction. As a counselor at the recovery center, she led a Women’s Self-Care group which addressed issues of physical and emotional well-being, co-dependency, healthy boundaries, and parenthood. Additionally, Melissa has served as a guest speaker for a support group for new mothers in the Atlanta area. Melissa sees her role as being a guide to help clients gain understanding of themselves. In doing so, clients can address barriers and learn how to live at their full potential. She works from an eclectic approach, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to explore thought and behavior patterns and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients better manage their emotions and relationships. I focus on being curious and nonjudgmental as I explore areas of an individual’s current functioning, those which are effective in addressing daily challenges as well as those which can interfere with effective functioning. I am also certified in EMDR which I tailor to the individual needs of my clients. Your life experiences have influenced your emotional beliefs and decisions. You use these thoughts, emotions, and deep beliefs as you interact with others and with your world. You may respond to situations in your life in ways which seem, on the surface, to be confusing or make no sense. Addressing this confusion and discomfort is an act of courage. Throughout the therapy process, we will examine these areas. My experience has been that this exploration will lead you to develop increased self-compassion, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. CLINICAL FOCUS I am a disordered eating counselor who is passionate about helping individuals heal their relationship to food and their bodies. Having worked in higher levels of care in eating disorder recovery (IP, RES, PHP), I have extensive knowledge and experience in treating a range of eating difficulty presentations. I believe that many of us end up stuck in patterns that aren’t serving us like they used to. These patterns are often why people enter therapy. My clients typically hear me say that their behaviors make sense and have been incredibly useful at times to keep them safe, connected, and surviving. When these behaviors don’t serve us anymore, we need to learn something new. That’s where therapy comes in. I incorporate EMDR and talk therapy to help people move past disordered eating behaviors and rebuild broken trust with themselves and their bodies. When our body isn't the enemy anymore, we have the capacity for more depth, connection, and presence in our lives. This impacts everything. I also work with individuals facing challenging relationship dynamics, trauma and attachment wounds, anxiety and depression, shame and self-worth issues, and spiritual concerns. WHAT TO EXPECT IN A SESSION My counseling style is warm and relational. I counsel from an attachment perspective, which means I prioritize building a secure relationship between us. We'll do hard work together, but you'll always have someone in the trenches with you. I conduct sessions virtually. This means we will meet from the comfort of your home (or lunch break if needed!). Being in an environment that is familiar to you can help create a sense of security. It can also eliminate barriers that make it difficult to attend therapy.
